ESPN says Nuggets fans shouldn’t get hopes up about free agency

Jun 27, 2019, 10:10 AM

‘Tis the season for NBA fans to dream. And in Denver, some are dreaming big.

After finishing last season with a 54-28 record, earning the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and advancing to Game 7 of the second round, there are plenty of reasons why Nuggets fans should be bullish on their team moving forward. Throw in a first-team All-NBA center, a point guard who blossomed in the playoffs and a deep bench, and there are many who think Denver is the team to watch in the West.

That being the case, coming to the Mile High City should be an option for big-name free agents to consider this offseason. As Tim Connelly pointed out during his end of the season press conference, players who are sincere about winning have to look closely at the Nuggets.

But how realistic is it that Denver will be in the mix for Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker and other free agents? According to the experts at ESPN who cover the NBA, the answer isn’t promising.

When free agency officially gets underway at 6:00 PM Eastern time on Sunday, the Worldwide Leader expects the usual suspects to be the ones courting the top-tier guys; at least, that’s what their latest poll results show. In other words, franchises in New York, Los Angeles and other big markets will get invited to the dance, while teams like Denver will once again be on the outside looking in.
