Melvin Gordon’s job has never been in more jeopardy

Jun 15, 2021, 12:00 AM

Melvin Gordon III signed a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos last offseason and will make $8 million this season. He came on hot in the second half of last year, and the Broncos released Philip Lindsay earlier this offseason.

With that said, Gordon’s job has never been more in jeopardy since becoming a Bronco.

Denver traded up in the second round for Javonte Williams, a running back out of North Carolina. This is technically George Paton’s first “risk” as a Broncos general manager. Second-round picks are expected to be starters, running backs are a dime a dozen and he traded up for one.

Williams will be used this season, and if Gordon gets off to his typical slow start, it could mean trouble for his workload sooner than later.

However, it’s not just Williams skillset and draft position that spells trouble for Gordon but the veteran running back himself.

Gordon has a history of injury, which is normal for the running back position. He also has a history of turnovers, which could be the main catalyst for Gordon’s lack of job security.

If Gordon puts the ball on the ground in Week 2, expect Williams to see a larger role sooner than later.
