The list of non-QBs to complete a pass for the Broncos may grow

Nov 28, 2020, 5:14 PM | Updated: 5:14 pm

When the Broncos take the field on Sunday to take on the Saints, it’ll likely be without a quarterback of any kind on the active roster. Why? Because of the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.

On Thursday, backup Jeff Driskel tested positive for the virus. At the time, the league determined that the team was okay to proceed with practice, after reviewing contact tracing data.

On Saturday, however, things changed. When the NFL learned that Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles had been exposed to Driskel and weren’t wearing a mask at the time, all three were ruled ineligible for Sunday’s game.

How will Vic Fangio deal with this truly unprecedented situation? By using wide receiver Kendall Hinton, who played some quarterback in college at Wake Forest, as Denver’s emergency QB.

That’s less than an ideal way to take on the best team in the NFC, as New Orleans arrives in town having won seven straight games. But it will provide for a crazy moment in Broncos history.

Hinton won’t be the first non-QB to complete a pass for the team. In fact, several players have pulled double duty since the franchise was founded in 1960.

Here’s a quick list:

1. Gene Mingo | HB / K | 6-18, 200 yards and two touchdowns
2. Bobby Anderson | RB | 8-16, 168 yards and one touchdown
3. Arthur Marshall | WR | 2-2, 111 yards and two touchdowns
4. Rod Smith | WR | 2-5, 86 yards
5. Billy Van Heusen | P | 2-5, 71 yards
6. Steve Sewell | RB | 2-7, 47 yards and one touchdown
7. Floyd Little | RB | 2-9, 43 yards and one touchdown
8. Chris Norman | P | 1-2, 43 yards and one touchdown
9. Courtland Sutton | WR | 1-1, 38 yards
10. Jon Keyworth | RB | 1-1, 32 yards and one touchdown
11. Gerald Wilhite | RB | 2-13, 31 yards
12. Donnie Stone | RB | 2-8, 31 yards and one touchdown
13. Emmanuel Sanders | WR | 1-1, 28 yards and one touchdown
14. Al Carmichael | WR | 1-1, 26 yards
15. Jack Gehrke | WR | 1-1, 19 yards
16. Mike Haffner | WR | 1-1, 18 yards and one touchdown
17. Bobby Humphrey | RB | 1-4, 17 yards and one touchdown
18. Riley Dixon | P | 1-1, 16 yards
19. Colby Wadman | P | 1-1, 12 yards
20. Tony Dorsett | RB | 1-2, 7 yards and one touchdown
21. Andrew Beck | TE | 1-1, 6 yards
22. Fran Lynch | RB | 1-2, 4 yards

Here’s hoping Hinton is more like Arthur Marshall than Gerald Willhite.
