Cheers/Jeers: Positivity to help combat coronovirus blues

We’re currently living history. Right now. In the present.

With the cancelation of pretty much every major sporting event across the United States in the past 48 hours, it’s clear this industry — and the country in general — is dog-paddling through uncharted territory.

But honestly, despite its inherent hokiness, it’s helpful to remember the oft-cited quote from television’s Mr. Rogers: “Always look for the helpers. There’s always someone who is trying to help.”

So, here’s a list full of cheers (that hopefully continues to grow) in a time of such uncertainty:

CHEERS | Kevin Love

In a post to his Instagram account on Thursday, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love said he planned to make the biggest assist of his career: He’s pledged to donate $100,000 to his foundation to help workers and support staff at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the arena in which the Cavs play.

Said Love:

Pandemics are not just a medical phenomenon. They affect individuals and society on so many levels, with stigma and xenophobia being just two aspects of the impact of a pandemic outbreak. It’s important to know that those with a mental illness may be vulnerable to the effects of widespread panic and threat. Be kind to one another. Be understanding of their fears, regardless if you don’t feel the same. Be safe and make informed decisions during this time. And I encourage everyone to take care of themselves and to reach out to others in need — whether that means supporting your local charities that are canceling events, or checking in on your colleagues and family.

CHEERS | Carmelo Anthony

In this week’s episode of the “Pull Up Podcast,” Melo and fellow teammate C.J. McCollum talk about the impending suspension to the NBA season, and both seemed unsure about their uncertain future.

That’s when Anthony took over with some sage wisdom from a 17-year veteran:

As athletes, we never think that it can happen to us. We’re always, ‘We’re good.’ I got this money. I got that money. It’s not until you hit a crisis when you really understand how much money you have … It’s going to get really, really bad.
