Three players make perfect sense for the Broncos on day two

Apr 26, 2019, 10:56 AM | Updated: 11:51 am

As the 2019 NFL Draft heads into day two, the Broncos are poised to be busy. In rounds two and three, Denver has three picks – Nos. 41, 52 and 71.

Who will be the choices in those spots? The following three options would make perfect sense:

41. Dalton Risner – The local angle (Risner is from Wiggins) would make this a good story, but the offensive lineman’s ability would make it a great selection. The Kansas State product can play anywhere on the line, which would be ideal for a Broncos team that has a lot of question marks in the trenches. Whether at guard, tackle or center, Risner could be plugged in to solve whatever proves to be Denver’s biggest issue on their patchwork o-line. NOTE: Many have Buffalo taking Risner at No. 40, so John Elway may have to wheel and deal to make this happen.

52. Lonnie Johnson – This choice would raise plenty of eyebrows in Broncos Country, as it would be a clear indication that the team is preparing to move on from Chris Harris, Jr. at cornerback. Denver thought they were set at that position after signing Kareem Jackson and Bryce Callahan in free agency, but CHJ’s recent demand for a new contract or a trade has muddied the waters. Johnson has all of the physical traits to be a top-flight NFL corner, so the Kentucky product would be a nice addition here. NOTE: As many as eight cornerbacks could go in the second round, so the Broncos will have plenty of options at this spot.

71. Deebo Samuel – The Broncos thinness at wide receiver doesn’t get a lot of attention, at least from the national draftniks. But with Emmanuel Sanders coming off of a torn Achilles tendon and the rest of the depth chart loaded with young, unproven players, Denver could use some more options on the outside. Samuel was a big-time playmaker at South Carolina, both in the passing game and on special teams, and brings an edginess to the position that is reminiscent of Steve Smith. He’d come right in and push DaeSean Hamilton for the No. 3 receiver spot as rookie. NOTE: Samuel has first- or second-round talent, but his attitude and recurring hamstring issues will scare away some teams.
