Stokley: Broncos can get back to contending, but ‘can’t miss’ in draft

Aside from the 2018 draft class, Mark Schlereth says the blame for the lack of depth and holes on the Denver Broncos roster goes back to a “series of less than productive drafts” during the past five years.

“It has been a struggle, last year notwithstanding. Last year was a good draft. Last year’s got a lot of productive players and a lot of players that you’re excited about,” the “Schlereth and Evans” co-host said this week. “But one good draft does not make up for … five subpar drafts.”

On Thursday, “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley championed a similar argument, saying that the Broncos have missed so many times over the past few years in the draft that they “can’t miss” this year.

“There are so many misses that it has caught up with the Broncos, and that’s why we’ve seen what we’ve seen the past couple of years,” Stokley said. “So, just get it right.”

But, if the Broncos can continue to stack up good drafts and continue to build its roster with good players, Stokley said the team could get back to contending for postseason berths and AFC West titles.

“They’re not that far away if they can get good football players in this year’s draft. You can’t miss again though,” Stokley said. “You can’t have a good draft last year and then go back to what you were two years ago.”
