Stokley: Broncos passing up on Kyler Murray riskier than drafting him

With Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray declaring his intention to pursue a pro career in football this week, instantly another quarterback comes into the picture potentially for the Denver Broncos at No. 10, with ESPN’s Mel Kiper ranking him eighth on his latest big board.

And with Murray potentially at a position in which the Broncos could draft him, the question becomes now is it worst to select the dual-threat quarterback and potentially miss on him or not draft him and watch him develop into the next star signal-caller with another team?

“I’d rather go all in and be aggressive and take the guy. And if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. But if you pass on greatness, that just haunts you,” said “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley on Tuesday.

Stokley compared the Murray situation to what teams who passed on Patrick Mahomes just a few years ago feel now as he’s become a league MVP.

“They both hurt. But, for me, it would hurt a little bit more if I’m watching that guy play great ball and I’m stuck not having a quarterback,” Stokley said.

Murray could possibly have a smooth transition to the NFL, Stokley said, because of ability to make plays happen with his legs.

“When you have legs and you can run with the football, that helps your transition to the NFL go so much easier and smoother,” Stokley said.

But if the Broncos do draft Murray, Stokley said the team must pattern its offense toward his strengths.

“Look, you can’t do what you did with Paxton Lynch and say you’ve got to fit us. No. We have to fit you. OK? We’re going to build this thing around you, Kyler Murray,” Stokley said. “That’s what you have to do.”
