Keenum, Davis among four first-time Broncos captains named Monday

Sep 3, 2018, 7:33 PM

The Denver Broncos announced Monday the selection of its six captains — two players each on offense, defense, and special teams — for the 2018 season, with four being first-timers for the team.

Offensive captains Case Keenum and Matt Paradis, defensive captain Todd Davis, and special teams captain Andy Janovich will all serve their first term as Broncos captain. The remaining two, kicker Brandon McManus and linebacker Von Miller, have each served as captain for Denver once before.

“All six guys are deserving of the honor, and I’m excited about those guys leading our team,” head coach Vance Joseph said after practice Monday.

Davis said after practice that it is a “huge honor” for his teammates to see him as “somebody that’s a leader and somebody that they’ll follow into battle.”

“That’s huge for me,” Davis said. “Now I just have to step up, continue to be that guy that works hard every single day — day in and day out — and do my best for all of my guys in the locker room.”

Joseph said he was “proud” of Davis, that in his two years in Denver he’s seen the linebacker do things right.

“He’s been a guy that we can count on. I’m really pleased that he became one of our captains,” Joseph said, saying the same goes for Paradis.

“He’s been a model teammate. He’s engaged every day in meetings and on the practice field, so he’s also deserving,” Joseph said of the Broncos center.

As for Keenum, Joseph said he “won by a longshot” the honor of being a team captain because “his teammates really believe in him.”

“He’s our quarterback. He’s our leader — not just by quarterback, but in the locker room, the man he is, and his teammates have respect for him,” Joseph said. “That was fun to see.”
