Broncos notes: Sloter still with 3s, ‘No Fly’ soars, Winn needs MRI

Following what 104.3 The Fan’s Cecil Lammey and Mike Pritchard dubbed a “disappointing” and “underwhelming” outing from Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, Denver Broncos rookie third-string quarterback Kyle Sloter helped lead the club to a come-from-behind win in the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.

Sloter, who came in with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, managed to go throw for 94 yards and a touchdown, statistically outpacing Lynch and Siemian combined, on 5-of-6 passing.

And with the outing came calls for Sloter to get a longer look from the Broncos coaching staff as the preseason continues.

But head coach Vance Joseph shot down that idea quickly during his post-game press conference.

“We’ve got Trevor and we’ve got Paxton, who we’ve been satisfied with. They’re both playing good football,” Joseph said. “Outside of the penalties tonight, I was impressed with both guys.”

When pressed further on if Sloter would get a longer look or reps with the second- or first-team offense, Joseph said, “It’s Trevor or Paxton’s job. First and second team.”

Chris Harris Jr pick-six starts seasons off right for ‘No Fly Zone’

Just three plays into the Broncos first defensive series, Chris Harris Jr showed that the unit had not lost a step in the offseason, pick off Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Glennon and taking it to the house.

After the game, Harris said it was “definitely” nice to get back to the end zone right off the bat.

“Just to get that taste of it. I can’t wait for Monday night, when they really count,” said Harris, referring to the Broncos regular season opener at home on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 11.

In his post-game press conference, Joseph said the Broncos defensive unit is “strong,” but it wasn’t a surprise to see Harris take one to the house.

Chris Harris, the play he made he’s made in camp the last couple of weeks. I wasn’t surprised,” Joseph said.

Harris echoed the comments, saying, “It’s kind of like the same play I’ve been seeing in practice. My read took me to that play. I just happened to be in the right spot.”

Winn seen on crutches after game, to undergo MRI on Friday

The Broncos did not come out of its preseason opener unscathed, as defensive lineman Billy Winn needed to be carted off after suffering a knee injury in the first quarter.

Winn was seen leaving the locker room on crutches, and Joseph said he’ll undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

“We should know about the injury tomorrow as far as how serious it is,” Joseph said.
