Renck: Broncos rookie defender DeMarcus Walker ‘mad,’ ‘motivated’

Jul 24, 2017, 9:46 PM

DeMarcus Walker, the Denver Broncos second-round pick out of Florida State, said during a press conference Monday that he’s been “waiting for this moment.”

The moment: When the Broncos rookies reported for training camp ahead of Thursday’s all-hands production.

Walker’s role: To help win games.

“We have to win games. I’m just here to help win games. That’s all I’m here to do — to win a Super Bowl,” Walker said Monday.

More specifically, Denver 7 Broncos Insider Troy Renck believes that in the worst case scenario Walker’s role will be a “rotational guy you can trust on third down to get some inside pressure.”

“Best case scenario is he’s a situational pass rusher who shows an ability to help stop the run,” Renck told 104.3 The Fan last week.

Role aside though, Walker appears to not be lack at all in the motivation department.

The morning before the second night of the NFL Draft in late April, Walker tweeted out the number of pass rushers — eight — who had been selected ahead of him in the draft.

And during a phone interview with the assembled media after being taken 51st-overall by the Broncos in the second round, Walker answered just four questions with short, to-the-point answers.

On tweeting the number of pass rushers who were taken ahead of him, Walker said:

“Even if I would’ve come in as the first pass rusher, I would’ve always had a chip on my shoulder. I believe I am going to prove myself — maybe even more so right now, for sure.”

“I’ll just show them. I have nothing to say. I’ll just show them,” Walker said of his doubters.

Renck reiterated the point last week, saying Walker was “mad” about his draft status and “motived,” even as recently as a few weeks ago.

“I’ve never seen a guy more upset about where he got drafted,” Renck said. “He honestly thinks he was the best pass rusher in the draft, that he should have been a first-rounder.”
