Teddy Bridgewater being the “safe option” is a myth

The Denver Broncos quarterback battle continues, for whatever reason, and the most annoying part is the coaching staff still insists it’s a 50/50 competition.

Broncos Country has been sold a narrative that Teddy Bridgewater is the “safe” option, while Drew is the “risk taker.” I’m here to tell you it’s a myth.

Bridgewater is not a “safer” quarterback than Lock. He has thrown more interceptions at camp than Lock, he threw only three fewer interceptions last season than Lock — with significantly better and more experienced pass catchers — and he has never thrown more than 15 touchdowns in a season.

This idea that Bridgewater is safe makes no sense. Why? Because he is known for check downs?

Besides throwing more picks at camp, Bridgewater has also showed he was less “safe” in the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Looking at his stat line, he went 9-for-11 for 105 yards and a touchdown. That seems great, but the team went for it on fourth down multiple times.

Bridgewater showed he was incapable of getting 10 yards on three downs. Sure, it’s nice he converted, but do you expect Vic Fangio to go for it on fourth down during the regular season? I don’t think so.

A perfect backup, Bridgewater is a guy who can come in for a few games if the starter gets hurt to hold things down. He’s a guy who can mentor a young quarterback into becoming a true pro. But if you’re relying on him to be a full-time starter, you’re in for a rough season.
