Dig in, Broncos Country, as this QB battle is far from over

Aug 10, 2021, 1:14 PM | Updated: 2:37 pm

It’s time to dig in, Broncos Country, because this quarterback competition between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater isn’t concluding anytime soon.

After the team’s final walkthrough on Tuesday before heading to Minnesota for joint training camp practices, Broncos head coach Vic Fangio announced Drew Lock would get the nod against the Vikings in preseason Week 1.

However, Fangio said that there has been “no separation” between Lock and Bridgewater, calling the competition “even-steven,” and the veteran will get the start in preseason Week 2 against the Seahawks in Seattle.

“I have confidence in both of those guys. I really do,” Fangio said.

Fangio said to expect Lock and Bridgewater to each play more than a quarter because of the shortened three-game preseason, and with Denver’s competition at offensive tackle, expect the team to mix and match offensive lineman for each quarterback.

“We’ve got four tackles that are competing, so they’ll be in there with two of those four,” Fangio said. “Same thing with the guards, so it may not be what you view as the exact No. 1’s, but we’re confident with the guys we have.”

On Monday, DenverFan.com’s Cecil Lammey wrote that he’s discouraged through 10 days of Broncos camp that neither Lock nor Bridgewater has separated himself in the quarterback competition.

Said Lammey: “Let’s hope the Broncos can decide sooner rather than later. The faster the team knows who their leader is going to be, the better it will be for them — and me. I’m sick of hearing about how close things are; just decide and move forward to get more wins — much-needed wins with so much on the line in the 2021 season.”
