Calvin Anderson was the biggest surprise on day one of training camp

When Ja’Wuan James ruptured his Achilles tendon during the offseason, the Broncos went searching for a new right tackle. They found two candidates, signing both Cameron Fleming and Bobby Massie to contracts.
As a result, it was assumed that those two would battle it out for the starting job, with Massie having a slight edge heading into training camp. That may turn out to be the case, but the decision won’t be as simple as A or B.
On Tuesday, Vic Fangio told the media not to sleep on Calvin Anderson. The 25-year-old undrafted free agent saw action in all 16 games for the Broncos in 2020, so the head coach wanted to make sure everyone was aware that he was in the battle.
During the first day of training camp, that proved to be the case. When the first team was on the field, it was Anderson who was lined up opposite of Garett Bolles.
What are his chances of staying there? Fangio think they’re pretty good.
“He’s a viable candidate for that job,” the head coach said after practice. “I just like the way he plays.”
What makes Anderson a good option? It’s not just the familiarity of having been in Denver last season.
“He’s a good athlete,” Fangio answered when asked what he likes about the second-year right tackle. “He plays hard and plays tough.”
All offseason, it seemed as though most of the Broncos starters were known. On day one of training camp, that notion was blown out of the water.
Already, a new potential starter has emerged. Calvin Anderson is the early surprise to get work with the ones.
