NFL insider: Broncos should act as if they’re drafting a QB

Mar 3, 2021, 3:31 PM

If the Denver Broncos don’t manage to land a top-tier quarterback in free agency or via trade, one NFL insider believes the team should conduct themselves as if they will draft one come April 29.

In his mailbag for SI.com, Albert Breer says that the Broncos should treat the next six weeks leading up to the NFL Draft as if they plan on taking a quarterback with a top pick.

“Does that mean they have to take one? No. But they’re picking in the top 10. They have the ability to move up,” Breer writes. “And this year, there are four guys who are both physically qualified to go that high and have tape that would merit such a pick: Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance.”

Denver could certainly land a quarterback — like Deshaun Watson or Sam Darnold — via trade, but Breer said that with a “relatively barren” crop of 2022 QB prospects, the Broncos “owe it to themselves” to act as if they’re going to take one in the draft.

The remarks come on the heels of a CBS Sports mock draft released on Wednesday that had the Broncos moving up to select Fields out of Ohio State.

NFL Draft analyst Chris Trapasso has Denver trading up from No. 9 to the Miami Dolphins slot at No. 3, where the club would select Fields after Lawrence and Wilson go back-to-back at No. 1 to the Jacksonville Jaguars and No. 2 to the New York Jets.
