The goal for 2020 remains finding out if Drew Lock is the long-term answer

Oct 6, 2020, 6:24 AM

The Broncos got their first win of the season, beating the Jets with Brett Rypien as their starting quarterback. He had highs, he had lows, and he proved that Drew Lock is this team’s starting QB as soon as he is healthy.

You have to hand it to Rypien, though. He got the victory on a short week with little to no reps with his teammates. He showed poise and got the ball out quickly for the most part. However, he did not take this job away from Lock.

Thus, the goal in 2020 remains finding out if Lock is the QB of the future for the Broncos.

It’s great that Rypien got a W for this team, but let’s be real, the Jets are the most-dysfunctional team in football. The Broncos still barely squeaked out a victory against the worst team in the NFL. He also threw three interceptions and easily could have thrown five. His first TD to Jerry Jeudy was less of a great throw by Rypien and more of a major play by Jeudy.

Lock is still this team’s QB. As nice as it was to see Rypien make some throws, he did nothing to make this a controversy. He beat the worst team in the NFL and it was a nail biter until the end.

Good for the Broncos, but this team is not a contender and the rest of the 2020 season needs to be spent figuring out what Lock means for this team. If he cannot prove he is the guy, the Broncos will likely be in the Trevor Lawrence (or Justin Fields) sweepstakes.
