DMac: ‘No reason’ to keep Keenum if Broncos go with younger QB

Earlier this week, Denver Broncos general manager told Peter King of “Football Morning in America” that current quarterback Case Keenum is “probably a short-term fix” and the team would need to find a long-term solution at the position.
And if, indeed, the Broncos find the right guy to fill that long-term role at quarterback, “The Drive” co-host DMac said the team must move on from Keenum instead of relegating him to a backup position.
“There is no reason, if you’re going with a younger guy, to have Case Keenum here. It’s confusing. It’s not a good environment,” DMac said.
DMac pointed to one of the more controversial quarterback situations in Broncos history, when Brian Griese, not Bubby Brister, took over the reins after John Elway retired in 1999.
“You can’t have distractions. Like, if you were going to do what you did with Brian Griese, you should have just moved on from Bubby Brister completely,” DMac said. “But you didn’t. You brought Bubby through training camp, and it really misled everybody on the team.”
Much like last season, which saw Denver trade quarterback Trevor Siemian at the start of free agency, the Broncos could make a similar move with Keenum, DMac said.
“If you’re going to get rid of Case Keenum, that’s the time to do it,” DMac said. “So, we’re really only talking about two more months possibly with Case Keenum as a member of the Broncos.”
As the players cleaned out their lockers following a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in the season finale late last month, Keenum said he was just “going to do what I do” and that he was confident in his abilities and that he can “play at the highest level in this league.”
“I’m not going to focus on proving people anything. I’m going to focus on winning football games, and I’m going to focus on being the best quarterback that I can be for the Denver Broncos,” Keenum said.
