Schlereth, Evans think Broncos take QB early in draft, split on when

With the Denver Broncos coaching staff quickly falling into place after the hiring of Vic Fangio last week, “Schlereth and Evans” hosts Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans turned their gazes toward the offseason Thursday, specifically what the team will do at quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Schlereth said that with general manager John Elway still “building a roster” and atoning for mistaken drafts of the past, he doesn’t believe the Broncos will go with a quarterback with its first pick.

“I just don’t see a quarterback being taken at No. 10-overall by John Elway. I don’t believe that’s going to happen,” Schlereth said.

Instead, Schlereth said he believes Denver needs to take a quarterback somewhere in the second or third round, someone who has the “potential to develop into a starter.”

“I think that you’re going to take a quarterback but you’re going to take a quarterback in the second or third round type of area,” Schlereth said. “And who that is, if that’s (Drew) Lock or if that’s (Will) Grier, whatever. But I believe that’s going to happen. So, I think that’s the direction they go in.”

Evans, on the other hand, said he believes Elway, whose contract as general manager runs out in three years, will either want to draft for himself or to pass along to the next front office a franchise quarterback.

“He talked about can’t stop swinging for the fences. I think he swings for the fence at No. 10. I think they draft a quarterback,” Evans said.

Evans, however, did say it’s a possibility that Elway and company read the draft and opt to trade back out of the No. 10 position, but in the end, the “Broncos go quarterback with their first pick in the first round.”
