DMac preaches patience with Broncos QB situation, no ‘instant fix’

Underwhelmed by the play from quarterback Case Keenum this season, there’s a growing sentiment among Denver Broncos fans and observers that it might be time to find a long-term solution at the position this offseason.

“Case Keenum, he’s not a franchise quarterback. He’s your starter, but he’s not a franchise quarterback. The Broncos are desperately looking for a franchise quarterback,” said “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard during The Fan War Room on Tuesday.

But “The Drive” co-host DMac preached patience during the roundtable discussion Tuesday, saying that 2019 isn’t the year for the Broncos to find that franchise quarterback.

“As tough as it might seem, my belief is in this draft, it’s not time to get that quarterback,” DMac said. “You’ve got to be looking more toward 2020.”

Instead, DMac called upon the Broncos to invoke “auto draft 2.0” to address the “massive holes” with its current roster.

“Don’t do anything desperate. The good guys will fall to you with where you’re going to have your draft position,” DMac said. “Build off a great draft this last draft with another great draft, and you’ve got to keep your eyes toward 2020 for the quarterback position.”

The plan isn’t an “instant fix” DMac said, adding that next year will be a “developmental draft year.” But if Broncos Country can stay patient and Denver can have another strong draft as it did in 2018, by 2020 “you’re kind of set,” DMac said, pointing to the rising Cleveland Browns as an example.

“They’re building on something. And if you give the sense, hey Broncos fans, we are going to build on something and this is how we’re going to do it …,” DMac said. “But that is really hard to do because who wants to wave the white flag.”
