If Case Keenum stays steady, do the Broncos still draft a quarterback?

Dec 4, 2018, 3:35 PM | Updated: 3:38 pm

Despite what appears to be an uptick in performance from Case Keenum during the past handful of games, the Denver Broncos will likely pursue a quarterback of the future, said Brandon Stokley on Tuesday.

The “Stokley and Zach” co-host said that he believes the perception about Keenum’s ability to be a franchise quarterback for the Broncos hasn’t shifted any in the past four games.

“You’re looking for a quarterback. You’re looking for your future franchise quarterback. And it’s not Case Keenum,” Stokley said. “He’s not that franchise, top-10, top-five quarterback. So, you’re going to look for that guy. And you’re open to drafting that guy in the first round if he’s available.”

Stokley said if the Broncos don’t see that franchise guy in the draft, they don’t have to panic. But if a quarterback is available that they like, he said they must pursue him.

“… If you see one available and you like him a lot, you take him. I don’t care what round it is,” Stokley said.

After a shaky start to the 2018 season, his first time as a full-time starter in the NFL, Keenum has largely played mistake-free football during the past four games.

With a 90.3 passer rating, Keenum’s thrown four touchdowns and no picks for 843 yards with a 58.54 completion percentage. In his previous eight games, Keenum threw 10 touchdowns and 10 picks and had a lower passer rating (83.0).

“Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said on Monday that the play that Broncos Country has seen from Keenum as of late likely wouldn’t change much, that he’s hit his “mean.”

“I think from here on out, this is what we’re going to get. You might skew it every once in a while to a higher level, but, for the most part, this is the mean of Case Keenum. This is the middle of Case Keenum,” Pritchard said.
