Analysis: The Fan reacts to the Broncos comeback win vs. Chargers

The Denver Broncos stunned the Los Angeles Chargers with a last-second field goal to win Sunday 23-22 on the road. Here’s how the 104.3 The Fan staff reacted:

Mike Evans (“Schlereth and Evans”):

Sorry, Vance Joseph haters, it’s going to be hard to fire a guy after a gutsy effort like that.

And, we may have seen Case Keenum come of age as the Broncos quarterback after that clutch, game-winning drive.

Cecil Lammey (“Pritchard and Cecil”):

Two things really stand out in this Broncos win.

First, Case Keenum was not sacked at all. If you would’ve told me that before the game, I would not have believed you.

The Denver Broncos were dealing with three new starters on the interior of their offensive line, and the Los Angeles Chargers were getting All-Pro defensive end Joey Bosa back.

That makeshift group did a fantastic job of blocking for the ground game and protecting Keenum when he went back to pass.

Second, the Broncos utilized Phillip Lindsay in a multitude of ways.

They used him as a “Wild Horse” quarterback, and he scored a touchdown on that play. They also lined him up out wide or in the slot as a receiver, and he caught passes from that spot.

He’s one of their most dangerous players, and Denver did a great job of featuring him on Sunday.

DMac (“The Drive”):

Every now and then things fall your way. The Broncos wrestled victory out of the hands of incompetence.

When the Broncos coaches decided to not challenge the two-point conversion, they made a colossal mistake that should’ve cost them the game.

It was difficult to predict that a Hall of Fame quarterback like Philip Rivers would be so inept when the game mattered most. It was obvious the Chargers aren’t as good as their record indicated, but still how do they play that bad when it mattered most?

At the end of the day, you have to give props to Case Keenum, who was spectacular in his ordinary play then exploded at the end.

Somewhere, Tim Tebow is smiling.

Zach Bye (“Stokley and Zach”):

The Broncos finally did Sunday what they hadn’t been able to pull off in years: go on the road and beat a team they weren’t supposed to beat. The fact that it came against Philip Rivers and the 7-2 Chargers makes it that much sweeter.

For all of his struggles that we’ve made sure to point out, Case Keenum was perfect when it mattered most. And I mean that literally. Keenum was 5-5 on the game-winning drive that gave all of Broncos Country an audible exhale. The deep breath that Vance Joseph took in Los Angeles when Brandon McManus punched through the game-winning field goal could be heard from Denver.

A win partly masks multiple coaching gaffes that could have easily cost the Broncos this win. The coach owes Von Miller and company a big “thank you.”
