Penalties hamper Broncos in 30-23 loss to AFC West foe Kansas City

Oct 28, 2018, 4:33 PM

Hampered by penalties, the Denver Broncos squandered once again a chance to knock off one of the NFL’s top teams on the road Sunday, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 30-23.

On the day, the Broncos had 10 penalties for 83 yards, including three that wiped out plays of 20 or more yards on offense.

“It killed us,” head coach Vance Joseph said after the game.

The Broncos led the Chiefs on Sunday in most statistical categories, including out rushing the prominent Kansas City offense 189 yards to 49.

In his first career start, Phillip Lindsay led all rushers with 95 yards, while having 76 yards negated via penalty.

“It’s definitely hard to lose a game when you rush for that because, in my opinion, we controlled the game outside of the penalties,” Joseph said. “And once the penalties occurred, we got pushed out of scoring range, we got into third-and-long, and they made their plays.”

Joseph said he knew Lindsay was going to play well and was “impressed” by Devontae Booker, who had 78 yards on nine carries.

“What we did offensively, I wasn’t surprised. I was hoping for a lot more, in the second half especially,” Joseph said. “But the penalties, again, kept pushing us back. It’s unfortunate.”

Linebacker Von Miller called it an “unfortunate situation,” saying it’s hard to “beat a good football team like that with those types of penalties.”

Miller called it a surprise that Denver now stares at a 3-5 record midway through the season, especially with what he believes is a “great” team.

“We have a great team, we have coaches, and we’ve got great culture. We’ve got all the ingredients to win football games. We’re just not doing it,” Miller said. “We get so many penalties like we’re an undisciplined football team, and we’re not. It’s just extremely frustrating.”
