Stokley: Whether or not it’s Kelly, this Broncos team needs a spark

Oct 8, 2018, 3:49 PM

Five games into the Denver Broncos season, what Brandon Stokley is seeing is reminding him of the 2017 campaign, wherein the club started out 3-1 and then toppled to 5-11.

Then, the “Stokley and Zach” co-host said on Monday, the Broncos waited too long to make a change at the quarterback position. And now, Stokley said he fears Denver’s heading down the same path again.

“You’re five games in, and people’s jobs are on the line. Moves have to be made quickly and decisively in the NFL,” Stokley said. “I know you gave (Case Keenum) a lot of money, you want to commit to him, you want to show that he’s your guy. But at the same time, you can’t keep watching bad football. And right now he’s playing really bad football.”

Stokley said at this point the Broncos have to be considering Chad Kelly, or at least be having “serious talks” about him taking over for Keenum if he doesn’t improve.

“You can’t let it go two or three more weeks before finally saying pull the plug,” Stokley said.

However, Stokley’s co-host Zach Bye said on Monday he’s not ready to call for Kelly just yet, but what he’s seen out of Keenum hasn’t been good enough.

“I have to be open and receptive to Case Keenum’s struggles. And it hasn’t been good enough,” Bye said. “And if he eventually loses his job, it will be his own doing.”

And Stokley said he doesn’t know if Kelly’s the answer, but this Broncos team that’s lost three consecutive games “needs a spark.”

“I don’t just like yanking starters out and putting other people in just to do it. It usually doesn’t work,” Stokley said. “But in this case, in this situation, this team needs a spark. They need something to get them going.

“Did you see them play yesterday? There was no spark.”
