Texas Wesleyan University terminated its head baseball coach on Thursday amid a report from Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan host Darren “DMac” McKee that he had discriminated against a potential recruit from Colorado over the state’s marijuana laws.
In a tweet Wednesday evening, DMac shared a screenshot of an email from Texas Wesleyan head coach Mike Jeffcoat to a high school student from Centennial saying that due to Colorado’s recreational marijuana laws the university didn’t recruit players from the area.
“Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test,” the email read. “We have made a decision to not take a chance on student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians.”
In a statement to the media Thursday morning, Texas Wesleyan president Frederick Slabach said the university does not condone Jeffcoat’s remarks, and that coupled with NAIA Conference violations he had been terminated.
“We do not tolerate discrimination at Texas Wesleyan University,” Slabach said.
