Big Al: Josh Allen probably drafted top 5 due to ‘freakish’ athleticism

Feb 21, 2018, 7:13 PM | Updated: 7:14 pm

Yeah, it’s fairly well known that Josh Allen has a throwing arm that more aptly compares to a howitzer attached to a torso.

But hitting the goalpost crossbar from the 40-yard line … on his knees? C’mon.

“Yeah, he’s got a cannon. Yeah, 100 percent,” fellow quarterback prospect Sam Darnold told Big Al and DMac on radio row at Super Bowl 52.

Allen — the Wyoming talent who Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo said has a physical skill set better than “anybody in the college game — has made the rounds on social media of late, most recently in a video taken by ESPN Cleveland’s Jordan Zirm.

But another viral video, taken by Denver Post Broncos reporter Nicki Jhabvala, has some concerned about Allen’s pro prospects, specifically in terms of his accuracy.

During Allen’s two seasons as the Cowboys starting quarterback, he completed 56.2 percent of his 649 passes. In 2017, he ranked 77th in all of the college football bowl subdivision, with Darnold coming in at No. 27 and fellow prospects Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield ranking 29th and first.

Bobo explained away Allen’s inaccuracy issues as having to deal with the style of play Wyoming had in 2016 and 2017, but Alfred “Big Al” Williams said on Tuesday the signal-caller might just not be able to translate his skills to the NFL.

“There’s a video of Josh Allen on his knees throwing a football 50 yards. He’ll probably get drafted in the Top 5 because he can do something that is freakishly athletic that nobody else can do, but it doesn’t translate to playing football.”

To Williams’ point, Allen landed in the top spot on Mel Kiper Jr’s latest mock draft, going No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns.
