What does a potential Broncos QB shakeup mean for Paxton Lynch?

Feb 21, 2018, 3:38 PM | Updated: 3:39 pm

A report from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Wednesday indicated that the likelihood of Trevor Siemian sticking with the Denver Broncos past this offseason is low.

According to Rapoport, the Broncos signal-caller is expected to be available on the trade block, “as the team will address the QB position aggressively” in free agency.

With Siemian potentially gone via trade and Brock Osweiler heading to unrestricted free agency, the Broncos quarterback room could be completely turned over, save for 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch.

Denver 7 Insider Troy Renck argued that in most offseason scenarios with the Broncos quarterback position, Lynch likely will remain with the team.

“If they get a true veteran I would say the most likely scenario is Paxton Lynch stays,” Renck said. “He’s making little money, you still have this investment in him, and in time maybe the lightbulb will go on.”

However, “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said that even though Lynch will likely remain with Denver through next season, he should have “more of a sense of urgency.”

“The Broncos are moving forward. They’re going to find a franchise quarterback,” Pritchard said. They’ve done too much work, in terms of whether it’s going to be through the draft or if they can make a splash in free agency.”

Pritchard’s partner, Cecil Lammey, said it’s perhaps a positive for Lynch to have what he called a “career near-death experience.”

“You’re a first-round pick. You’re the talk of the town two years ago. You’re on the cover of Sports Illustrated, right? The next one,” Lammey said. “And now, you’re almost out of the league.”

Said Pritchard: “When it’s about to leave, you’re about to never play again, and, you know what, you realize that something’s about to be taken away from you that you love. And then what happens? You elevate. So, if that’s about to happen for Paxton Lynch and he elevates, that’s great.”

Pritchard also said it’s a great opportunity for 2017 rookie Chad Kelly to leave his mark and perhaps take that third quarterback opening with the Broncos.

“Chad Kelley, we’ve got an opportunity. You were injured your first year. You seem to be a guy who has kind of turned it around in terms of off the field (stuff). You’re focused on football,” Pritchard said. “Let’s see what you’re capable of. Let’s see what you can do. So, I think it’s a tremendous opportunity for him, Kelly.”
