New DU athletics, recreation head ‘eager’ to carry on Pioneers legacy

Feb 19, 2018, 2:07 PM

Newest leader at the University of Denver, Karlton Creech said via a release on Monday he’s “eager” to carry on the “tradition of athletic and academic excellence” those have come to expect from the DU Pioneers.

The university announced via the release on Monday that Creech will take over as the vice chancellor for athletics, recreation, and Richie Center operations effective May 1, when current vice chancellor Peg Bradley-Doppes retires after 13 years.

“I am eager to continue the tradition of athletic and academic excellence that has been established at the University of Denver,” Creech said. “Athletics is personal. My wife Staci went to school on an athletics scholarship so I know the importance of our student-athletes excelling in the classroom and the community.”

Previously, Creech served as the University of Maine athletic director since 2014 and was a senior associate athletic director at the University of North Carolina the decade previous to that.

Creech will oversee the Division of Athletics and Recreation, which includes 17 Division I teams.

“Karlton is a perfect fit for our diverse, ambitious and innovative community—with his focus on students and celebrating achievement,” chancellor Rebecca Chopp said in the release. “Known as a bridge builder on and off campus, Karlton will help us all achieve our dreams and aspirations.”

Creech will work in conjunction with athletic director Rob Grahame, who assumed the role in August.
