Big Al: ‘No excuses,’ Broncos new coaching hires ‘better work’

The Denver Broncos made official the hiring of three coaches to its staff following the purge of assistants earlier this week — Sean Kugler (offensive line guards/centers), Curtis Modkins (running backs), and Mike Sullivan (quarterbacks).

And with the new batch of coaches, and the ones to follow soon after, any failure now falls directly on head coach Vance Joseph, “The Drive” co-host Alfred Williams said on Thursday.

“There are no excuses. If the guys that you’re replacing, their units don’t play up to the level that we are expecting, then that’s on the head coach,” Williams said.

Fellow “The Drive” co-host DMac championed a similar sentiment, saying that “no matter” what happens, “this is on Vance.”

“For whatever reason, this is on Vance. I don’t want to hear any excuses,” DMac said.

Earlier Thursday, “Schlereth & Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth praised the Broncos for acknowledging issues with an offensive line that allowed Trevor Siemian to be sacked 33 times in 10 games.

“If they fix those things, man, it’s going to be pleasant next offseason and next season,” Schlereth said.

But, Stink did advise the Broncos to perhaps better utilize some of the personnel it already in the unit, specifically moving prized free agent Ron Leary back to this home position of left guard.

“Solidify the left side of that offensive line. Don’t create two problems by moving one guy,” Schlereth said.

And with that fix, Schlereth said, Kugler and company can work on bolstering the right side of the line.

“Put him back where he belongs and then fix the right side of your offensive line, and that means finding yourself guard who can play, find yourself an offensive tackle that can play, draft those guys, open up the competition there, and fix this offensive line,” Schlereth said, “because that’s the biggest thing that you have to look at and the biggest task at hand.”
