Schlereth to Broncos HC Joseph: ‘Figure it out’ or start job search

Nov 14, 2017, 10:03 PM

After a second consecutive blowout loss on Sunday, this time at the hands of rival New England, Broncos Country seemed out for blood.

“You heard DMac, right? Fire Olivo. Fire Isaiah McKenzie. Fire this guy. Fire that guy. Fire everybody,” Schlereth said on Tuesday. “Eventually, you don’t even have enough guys on your roster to show up …”

“You can’t fire everybody.”

Completely cleaning house may be out of the question, but if things don’t change quickly, Schlereth said, Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph might need to update his resume.

“Vance Joseph, you need to figure it out now. You need to look at what’s going on now, and you need to be in charge, man,” Schlereth said. “The worst thing you can do, even when things are going poorly, is to lose command, to lose respect.”

The comments come a day after Joseph backed special teams coordinator Brock Olivo, whose unit’s blunders accounted for 24 Patriots points on Sunday.

“That game yesterday was bad for us as far as the (special) teams. We had three errors, well actually four errors that lead to 24 points, but I’m fine with Brock,” Joseph said on Monday. “Brock works hard, he’s a young coach, and he’s a bright coach. He’s going to be a great coach in my opinion.”

After Sunday night’s home tilt, Joseph said a loss like the 41-16 thumping the Broncos experienced is on all of the coaching staff.

“It’s a staff that we chose and that we feel great about,” Joseph said. “… I would say it’s on all of us. We have to coach better and play better.”

However, Schlereth’s morning co-host, Mike Evans, said Joseph shouldn’t shoulder all of the blame for the Broncos recent woes, that you have to look to the top of the organization to general manager John Elway.

“This notion that it’s all on Vance and that Vance is the guy who needs to be blamed for all of this, I’m sorry. You’ve got to include Elway in this,” Evans said, adding that Elway not only handpicked Joseph for the head coaching job but also his coaching staff.

“Let’s keep in mind, Vance Joseph did not hire his assistants. Most coaches, they get to hire their assistants,” Evans said. “These were assistants that were basically handpicked by John Elway. Vance Joseph was handpicked by John Elway.”
