Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is pointing the finger at himself for the team’s sloppy Week 1 outing against the Tennessee Titans.

Even though the Broncos won 20-12, the offense wasn’t crisp. QB Bo Nix had two interceptions and a fumble. Marvin Mims Jr. dropped a punt. And if it weren’t for the defense having six sacks and recovering two fumbles, Denver definitely could’ve lost.

And while many people were upset with how Nix played, at his press conference on Wednesday, Sean Payton was taking the blame.

“I don’t know how many games I’ve called, but that’s one of those where you can come away from it, like ‘man, I’ve got to be a lot better,'” Payton said.

Normally, by this point, the Broncos would be completely on to their Week 2 opponent in the Indianapolis Colts. But it sounds like Payton is taking plenty of time to digest what went wrong for the offense against the Titans.

“When the game ends and you evaluate it, and you say ‘alright, how were we with the details?’ We’re fairly young, if we feel like the answer isn’t maybe up to what we want, then we’ve got to look at how much,” Payton said.

A lot of people think a win is a win, no matter what. Sean Payton would clearly rather be 1-0 than 0-1, but he’s taking time to teach from the Tennessee game. His players — and himself.

“So, in that self check, in that process, the day after if you will. If you’re not careful sometimes, the game can be over and you’re on to the next opponent, and you haven’t really debriefed properly. And we’re really trying to pay attention to that,” Payton said.

There’s no question the Broncos offense needs to be better on Sunday in Indy. It sounds like Sean Payton knows that, and he’s working to make the adjustments to improve rapidly.
