Greg Penner cites ‘fresh start and fresh thinking’ amidst Broncos coaching changes

Denver Broncos owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton-Penner attended the NFL Honors on Thursday night ahead of the Super Bowl.

And while the Broncos were surprisingly shut out of the awards, the Penners were gracious enough to chat with 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis.

There are a handful of key takeaways from the interview, but perhaps the most relevant involves the recent coaching changes Sean Payton made on his staff.

Payton fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and two other assistants after a disappointing 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Title Game.

Davis Webb has been promoted to offensive coordinator and Logan Kilgore takes over Webb’s old title as quarterbacks coach.

This raises the million-dollar question of who will call the plays on offense for the 2026 Broncos? There’s been a lot of speculation and chatter that Payton could hand those duties to Webb, but nothing’s been made official. The answer from Greg Penner to Klis is an interesting one.

“Obviously had a lot of conversation about the different changes with the coaches and we’re really excited for Davis and Logan,” Greg Penner said. “For a lot of these guys it’s a fresh start and fresh thinking and we’re looking forward to it.”

Part of the reason Greg Penner and the Walton-Penner Family Ownership group have been so successful in their four seasons owning the Broncos is hiring the right people and then letting them do their jobs.

One has to think it’ll ultimately be Payton’s decision who calls plays, him or Webb, but fresh thinking might come into the choice. Did the Denver offense get a little stale at times in 2025? To some fans, yes. The Broncos had eight games in which they scored 20 points or fewer, including the playoffs.

On the other hand, QB Bo Nix was eighth in the NFL in passing yards and threw for almost 4,000 of them. He also tossed 25 touchdowns, which was tied for ninth in the league. Running back J.K. Dobbins was a top-5 back before suffering a season-ending injury 10 games into the season.

We’ll see how it all shakes out, but it’d be a huge change letting the 31-year-old Webb call plays over the 62-year-old Payton. And sometimes newer isn’t necessarily better.

Regardless, it’s a good get from Klis and generous by the Penners to take the time just 11 days after the 2025 season ended in heartbreaking fashion.
