Denver Broncos starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham took the podium on Wednesday.

That’s still a strange sentence to read.

Stidham will start the AFC Title Game for the Broncos against the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon. Nix is done for the year with a fractured ankle, so Stidham is up next.

And while there were plenty of football questions, Jarrett Stidham did something very classy at the start of his press conference. He wanted to talk about Nix and not himself.

“This is not about myself. First of all, obviously my thoughts and prayers have been with Bo since Saturday night. It’s crushing because he’s one of my best friends,” Stidham said. “And Sam (Ehlinger) and I were talking about this, Sam and I probably spend more time with him than his wife does right now. And that’s just the nature of the business that we’re in.”

Because these guys are always at the practice facility, they’re constantly with each other. Nix gets all the headlines, and rightfully so, but Stidham is there every single day working on his craft as well.

“When training camp starts, that’s just how it is. I see Bo more than I see my kids. It’s just one of those things, you spend so much time with someone, you see how hard they work, how good of a teammate they are. And then that happens and you feel crushed for him and everything. Obviously, my prayers and stuff have been with him,” Stidham said.

Jarrett Stidham went on to talk about how he’s going to be himself and “not gonna try to be somebody I’m not.” That’s the right mindset.

The Broncos don’t need Stidham to be a hero to go to the Super Bowl, they need him to manage the game and not turn the football over against the Patriots. If one of the top NFL defenses steps up and the offense doesn’t make mistakes, anything remains possible.

The football game on Sunday is very important. But Jarrett Stidham handled this crazy opportunity very well, keeping the focus on Nix and everything he’s going through right now. Nix also posted a message on Instagram, one Broncos Country should read.
