Schlereth: Best for all parties if Broncos part ways with Paxton Lynch

Former first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch said on Tuesday that he loves it in Denver and “absolutely” wants to remain with the Broncos.

“I’ve said that since Day 1, I’ve wanted to be ‘the guy’ here,” Lynch said. “I’ve gone through some things, I’ve struggled, I haven’t played well at times and at times I have played well. I’ve just got to find that consistency of constantly playing well. And I know that I can get there.”

However, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said on Tuesday morning it would be in the best interest of both the Broncos and Lynch if the young quarterback made a fresh start somewhere new.

“I’m not rooting against him. I want him to figure it out. I want him to go find success somewhere else,” Schlereth said. “But he’s not going to find it here.”

After being relegated from starting hopeful to backup in 2017, and then third-stringer this preseason, keeping Lynch as the team’s third wheel only hurts the club and the growth of its quarterback room.

“If he hasn’t progressed, if he’s actually regressed to this point, what makes you think he’s going to get it figured out here in Denver?” Schlereth said. “Do yourself a favor. It is time to set sail with Paxton Lynch.”

What’s more, Schlereth said, keeping Lynch on the final 53-man roster hurts the credibility of the Broncos front office and coaching staff.

“If you keep him on this football team, you’re basically telling everybody else that merit doesn’t matter, that we’ve kept this guy simply because we don’t want to be wrong, simply because our egos have got involved,” Schlereth said.

But, ultimately, Schlereth said he believes Lynch will be on the finalized roster come this weekend, which he called a “mistake.”

“It’s going to be hard for them as an organization to let Paxton Lynch go. And I think the three of those guys actually make it, which I think is a mistake,” Schlereth said. “I think Paxton Lynch needs to leave. I think you need to just get rid of him. But, again, I’m not making the calls over there.”
