Cam Johnson left the floor in pain on Monday night in the final minutes of the Denver Nuggets 118-110 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, but the sharpshooting forward could play again as soon as Wednesday.
On the NBA’s official injury report for Denver’s date with the Raptors, Johnson is listed as probable for the contest with a hamstring issue.
Johnson was in just his second game back in the lineup before he was seen grabbing the back of his leg after a drive where he dished to Jamal Murray for a triple. But he couldn’t get back on defense and outToumani Camara hit a 3-pointer with 1:10 left to all but seal the game. Johnson finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Head coach David Adelman did not give an update on Johnson after the game.
Johnson left the second quarter of the season opener at Oklahoma City. He came back Friday against his former team, the Phoenix Suns, and Denver won its NBA Cup opener 127-120.
Having Johnson come back healthy is huge given the Nuggets are already thin at power forward with Spencer Jones still being out with a hamstring injury he suffered in training camp, and Julian Strawther is also sidelined. Rookie Trevon Brazile has filled some of that gap.
Injuries at forward have been a problem for Denver for a while. Last season, Cam Johnson missed 28 games with several different injuries. Peyton Watson missed 28 regular-season games and missed the entire postseason with a hamstring strain. Aaron Gordon missed 46 games with hamstring and calf problems.
So Johnson is a key figure for the Nuggets, even if he’s not playing his best at the moment. Denver hosts the Raptors on Wednesday.
