A Sanders family affair at CU: Prime’s daughter joins CU Buffs hoops team

Jan 12, 2023, 1:40 PM

When Deion Sanders decided to move to Boulder, it wasn’t just him coming to the Colorado Buffaloes. Coach Prime is leading the football program, his son is quarterbacking it, and now his daughter is adding to the women’s basketball team.

According to Brian Howell of the Boulder Daily Camera, a beat writer for both the CU football and women’s basketball teams, Shelomi Sanders will join the Buffs’ women’s basketball team next week as a walk-on.

Shelomi, the youngest daughter of Coach Prime, is a 5-foot-7 guard who played this past semester at Jackson State. She’s only played one minute, but she did make the trip with the Tigers when they played at CU on Nov. 12. Shelomi has been spotted in the family’s youtube videos and was looking for a place to rent in Boulder earlier this week. Those videos are made by Deion Jr and Darius Sanders.

“It’s just getting acclimated early,” CU head coach JR Payne told Howell. “It’s such a huge physical transition to the level and amount of training that we’re doing in the weight room. And, they’ll get enough basketball with the group that they will understand expectations and how we operate, how we do things.”

Payne is in her seventh season leading the Buffs, taking them to the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since 2013. Currently, the Buffs are 13-3 this season.

Sanders has another child, Shilo, who was also spotted in Boulder in those videos. He hasn’t officially transferred to Colorado yet but he is in the portal and the talk in those videos indicates he’s likely to join the rest of his family in leaving Jackson State. Shilo is a safety and upperclassman, Shelomi is a freshman and Shedeur—the Buffs new quarterback—is between the two in age.
