Prime won’t name Buffaloes QB1, report reveals change

The Colorado Buffaloes host the No. 12 ranked and undefeated Texas Tech on Saturday — but Deion Sanders didn’t share who will take the first snap for the black and gold in Boulder. However, a report from CBS Sports indicated that the Buffs are making a change.

Matt Zenitz shared that CU will give the ball to third-year QB Isaac Wilson.

This comes after the Buffs benched highly-recruited redshirt freshman JuJu Lewis during their loss at Baylor last week. They installed Wilson at the position for the second half. Sanders didn’t confirm this plan or share much of anything Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Lewis has run a Buffs offense that has been mostly ineffective against power opponents this year, beside his game-winning drive in Atlanta Week 1. But coming off a blowout loss to Northwestern then a first half where they couldn’t move the ball against the Bears, Coach Prime turned to Wilson. He took over and led a fourth-quarter drive that tied the game at 13 before the Buffs faded. After the game, Sanders was committal about his plan, saying he would think about it on his plane ride home.

By Tuesday, nothing had changed in the way Sanders was talking.

“We’re going to see how practice plays out this week,” Sanders said about naming a starter, leaving the competition open despite the report that stated they had already decided.

Sanders followed up with a quote that makes it seem like they may have already made the change.

“I haven’t talked to JuJu, but I’ve talked to Isaac,” Prime said. “The kid is excited about the possibilities. He stood up in the meeting and talked, I’m proud of the young man.”

Wilson was in the high school class of 2024 and was a four-star recruit. He completed 12 passes of his 25 for 156 yards with a touchdown after stepping in during the 23-13 loss to Baylor last week.

Prime said he’s making his decision based on “flow, rhythm, having a grasp of the offense.” He also said “Isaac had a great spring. I don’t know if you guys remember that. If he gets the nod, I feel all out that he’s going to do his thing.”

Sanders also again mentioned freshman quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne as an option, though that seems unlikely.

“Regardless of who’s out there, we’re confident in them and we’re gonna make plays for them,” Colorado wide out Joseph Williams said.

Saturday’s game at 5:30, we’ll find out who is playing quarterback for sure, shortly after.
