Phillip Lindsay could play a revenge game against Denver on Thursday

Phillip Lindsay had many special moments at Empower Field at Mile High.

But those were while he was wearing a Broncos uniform. Lindsay could do it for the Colts against his former team on Thursday night.

With the news that All-Pro Jonathan Taylor will miss the game due to an ankle injury, Lindsay is a likely candidate to be promoted from the Indianapolis practice squad. That move could come down at any point in the next 24 hours.

The Colts currently have only Nyheim Hines and Deon Jackson as healthy running backs on the 53-man roster. Lindsay told Zak Keefer of The Athletic that if called upon, he’ll be ready to go. The two spoke before the Taylor news came down.

Lindsay, on the Colts' run game issues: "There’s a lot of game left. I know Jonathan’s frustrated at times. I know coach is frustrated at times. I don’t know how he did at the start of last season, but then he exploded. That just shows you that you stay true to what you do."

Lindsay, of course, played his high school football at Denver South and college ball at the University of Colorado. He went undrafted in 2018 before catching on with the Broncos. Lindsay posted back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in ’18 and 2019 and scored 16 total rushing touchdowns. He had a down year in 2020 before playing for the Texans and Dolphins a season ago.

Lindsay was signed by the Colts, then cut, then added back to the practice squad as preseason wrapped up at the end of August. He’s yet to appear in a regular season game with Indy.

And with the Broncos having their own running back issues, many fans wondered if they would go after Lindsay. Javonte Williams shredded his knee and is done for the year, while Melvin Gordon can’t stop fumbling the football.

A Lindsay move didn’t happen this week, in part because it’s not allowed. An NFL team can’t sign a player off a different practice squad if he plays for their next opponent.

Instead, GM George Paton poached Latavius Murray from the New Orleans practice squad. Murray’s not ruling out making his Denver debut on Thursday night. And Lindsay could very well be in the other backfield.
