Jared Bednar announces another member of the Avs had surgery

Jun 9, 2022, 12:39 PM

For the second time this week, a member of the Colorado Avalanche has undergone surgery.

It’s unclear whether or not either guy will play again in the playoffs.

After news surfaced on Monday center Nazem Kadri had surgery on his broken thumb, Avs head coach Jared Bednar announced after Thursday’s practice that forward Andrew Cogliano also went under the knife.

Bednar added that he hopes both Kadri and Cogliano could be back at “some point” during the Stanley Cup Final, which would obviously be massive. Kadri was “back in the gym” today according to Bednar, and Cogliano should follow in the next couple of days.

In terms of where things stand with the starting goalies, Bednar said it will be a “tough decision” on whether or not to start Pavel Francouze or Darcy Kuemper in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Francouz started the last three games of the Western Conference Finals, going 3-0 after replacing Kuemper. The Avs starting goalie left Game 1 against the Oilers with an eye / concussion injury, but dressed for Game 4 as the backup. Kuemper said after practice on Thursday that he is “100 percent.”

The Avs await the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers for the Stanley Cup. That series is currently tied 2-2 in the Eastern Conference Finals, with Game 5 later tonight.
