COLORADO AVALANCHE

Avalanche already making history with an absurd number of goals early on

The Colorado Avalanche have another ridiculously good team.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the Avs won the Presidents’ Trophy last season and brought back almost all of their key players.

But early in this new campaign, Colorado has the rest of the NHL’s attention. Again. They’re scoring goals at a ridiculous pace including a 7-3 beatdown of the Flames on Thursday night.

In fact, the Avalanche have 23 goals through four games, something the NHL hasn’t seen in more than 30 years

Whenever a team is in the same sentence as Wayne Gretzky it’s a good sign.

The Avalanche got two goals apiece in Calgary from superstar defenseman Cale Makar, plus his good friend Devon Toews and newcomer Jayden Schwartz.

On the season, Colorado has seven players who have already found the back of the net twice. Nathan MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen have three goals each to go along with Makar and Schwartz.

And 15 Avalanche players have at least two points through four games, showing the scoring is coming from across all four lines, forwards and defenseman.

Colorado has 23 goals and has only given up 11 — their plus-12 goal differential leads the NHL by four over the next closest squads in the Golden Knights and Rangers.

It’s a long, long journey ahead — something president / GM Joe Sakic and the players have acknlowedged. The regular season really is just an appetizer for the playoffs.

But the games count for postseason seeding and it looks like the Avalanche are locked in, ready to get the best seed possible to try to avenge last year’s disappointment.

Right now, opposing teams can’t stop them from lighting the goal lamp.
