Vic Fangio’s defense has been Kryptonite to Andy Reid’s offense

Oct 17, 2019, 6:15 AM | Updated: 12:18 pm

With the Broncos on a two-game winning streak and the Chiefs on a two-game losing streak, more and more signs point in Denver’s favor entering tonight’s game against Kansas City.

The Chiefs will be without Sammy Watkins, Kendall Fuller, Eric Fisher, Chris Jones and Andrew Wylie. You also can’t forget that Patrick Mahomes has been nursing an ankle injury for the past couple of weeks. Playing and traveling on a short week isn’t helping the Chiefs either.

There’s one more sign that points in Denver’s favor.

Since Andy Reid became the head coach of the Eagles in 1999, the current Chiefs head coach has called plays against Vic Fangio a grand total of just five times. From 1999 to today, the Broncos head coach has faced Reid with four different teams, beating Reid four out of the five times.

In those five games, Vic Fangio’s defenses have only allowed 19 points per games. In those wins, Fangio’s defenses only allowed 15 points per game.

You must also remember that those quarterbacks that Andy Reid had in those five matchups were Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Alex Smith. Those are all mobile quarterbacks, with Vick and Smith running similar offenses that Reid runs now with Mahomes.

Vic Fangio has shut down Reid’s quarterbacks to an average completion percentage of 57% and 235.8 passing yards per game. Those same quarterbacks have a combined total of only six touchdowns, five interceptions and 10 sacks.

Let’s not forget about the running game, though.

Reid’s leading running backs have averaged 53.4 yards per game against Fangio’s defenses, with a total of just two combined rushing touchdowns. The Broncos currently own the fourth-best total defense in yards per game, but also seventh in points per game.

This Broncos defense is finally evolving into what everyone hoped for at the beginning of the season and it’s expected to be a big problem against the Kansas City offense heading into tonight’s game. History suggests that’ll be the case
