KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jerry Rosburg sat in on special-teams meetings this week, and he made his first big decision: Removing Montrell Washington from punt-return duties.
Washington will be inactive for the first time this year.
The rookie, a fifth-round choice from Samford, averaged 8.5 yards per punt return and 18.9 yards on kickoff runbacks. He fumbled five times this season.
Earlier this week, Rosburg said that he planned to work with Washington on a drill with other punt returners.
“We are going to have a good drill today that’s really centered around he and the other returners,” Rosburg said. “We are going to try and put him in a position so that he can use his skills as they fit into our returner plan.”
In addition to Washington, Denver also scratched DL D.J. Jones and edge rusher Baron Browning. Both were questionable this week.
With Jones inactive, the Broncos now have just two players who have started every game: safety Kareem Jackson and CB Pat Surtain II.
The Broncos other inactives are:
- QB Jarrett Guarantano
- RB Tyler Badie
- OT Calvin Anderson
- WR Freddie Swain
Guarantano, Badie and Swain are healthy scratches.
Other big news regarding players not suiting up Sunday came in the previous 48 hours. Friday, the Broncos placed TE Greg Dulcich on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. A day later. edge rusher Randy Gregory landed on IR after playing two games following his return from a knee scope.
In all, 20 players are currently on injured reserve. Four other players spent time on IR but are back on the active roster:
- LS Jacob Bobenoyer
- RB Chase Edmonds
- S Justin Simmons
- RT Billy Turner
CB Michael Ojemudia also returned from injured reserve. However, the Broncos waived him Dec. 27.
