Hackett excited to be joined by Prime Time as a football coach in Colorado

Dec 5, 2022, 3:45 PM

On a Sunday in December, the Denver Broncos weren’t the biggest sports story in town.

That honor went to the University of Colorado, where the football program introduced Deion Sanders as its 28th head football coach on Sunday afternoon. It just so happened to be at the same time the Broncos were blowing a 9-3 lead to the Ravens in Baltimore. Denver dropped to 3-9 on the season with the 10-9 loss.

In what is possibly the most disappointing season in Broncos history, the Buffs were worse in 2022. But it’s not like they had any real expectations, and no one was all that surprised to see them finish at 1-11. Firing former head coach Karl Dorrell wasn’t a surprise, either, but CU AD Rick George landing Prime Time as his successor was shocking.

The Buffs have dominated the football conversation both locally and nationally over the last 48 hours, so naturally, Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett was asked his thoughts about Sanders getting the job at his press conference on Monday.

“I congratulate him. What a great opportunity. What he did at Jackson State was unbelievable and it shows how good of a coach he is. I’m very excited for him and the state of Colorado to have him here,” Hackett said.

How long Hackett and Prime both coach in this state remains to be seen. The Broncos have five games left on the season, and it’d be surpising if Hackett isn’t let go once it concludes. Heck, he could be fired before the year ends. Some folks are surprised it hasn’t happened yet.

And Hackett is a fan of Sanders. He even got a chance to meet him back in the day.

“I met him one time when I was a kid, I remember that. He probably wouldn’t remember that, but it’s Prime Time. He’s one of the best to ever play this game and it’s great to have him here,” Hackett said.

Great to have him here, indeed. In a weird turn of events, the Broncos head coach isn’t the most famous football coach in Colorado. No, that honor undoubtedly goes to the man in charge in Boulder.

Prime Time.
