Rockies set two dubious marks for futility with so many strikeouts in Atlanta

Once again, the Colorado Rockies are one the wrong side of history.

We told you last month about Cardinals legend Albert Pujols doing something that hadn’t been done in 51 years with his grand slam. Tonight, it was Colorado’s inept offense making headlines.

Facing Atlanta starting pitcher Spencer Strider, the Rockies struck out an unbelievable 16 times in eight innings. Not only is that an MLB-high for strikeouts this year by a single pitcher, it’s a Braves franchise record. The Braves! Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine all never did it in their Hall of Fame careers.

Congratulations to Strider, as his stuff was filthy. But the Rockies did themselves no favors — constantly failing to make contact and looking totally befuddled at the plate. Colorado’s 3-0 loss sent them to a 56-76 mark on the season, dead last in the NL West and 35 games back of the Dodgers.

This season can’t end soon enough, but we’ll see what other dubious records the Rockies can set in the next five weeks.
