Tough Tuesday: Broncos make five more moves, trim roster down to 80

Aug 23, 2022, 1:12 PM

The Denver Broncos trimmed their roster once again on Tuesday afternoon, making four more cuts and one other move to get down to the 80-man limit mandated by the NFL. A much larger cut will take place at the end of August, when the final 53-man roster and practice squad are set.

Head coach Nathaniel Hackett talked again on Tuesday about what a tough day this is, and said it can even be “awkward” as players suffer a huge setback in their NFL dreams Here’s who he and Broncos GM George Paton dismissed:

  • Trey Quinn, wide receiver (SMU)
  • Joe Schobert, linebacker (Wisconsin)
  • Stevie Scott III, running back (Indiana)
  • Casey Tucker, tackle (Arizona State)

The Broncos also moved offensive lineman Tom Compton to the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. He will be eligible to return in Week 5 against the Colts.

Quinn led the Broncos in receiving against the Bills, hauling in five catches for 47 yards. Schobert was just signed as a free agent last week, but had a tough day in Buffalo. Scott was in a revolving running backs room, but had five carries for only 13 yards last Saturday. Tucker suffered a nasty toe injury in the second half against Buffalo.

The Broncos have one preseason game left to evaluate the rest of their roster. It’s a home date on Saturday with the Vikings, a game in which most of the starters won’t play, so it’s an opportunity for a few precious jobs to be won.

Denver will then have 16 days between games before they finally kickoff the regular season on Monday, Sept. 12 in Seattle.
