Von Miller’s praise of Teddy Bridgewater is meaningless

Sep 19, 2021, 4:25 PM

Last Sunday, Von Miller said something that raised eyebrows. While mic’d up in the Broncos win over the Giants, the linebacker put Teddy Bridgewater in good company.

“I ain’t felt that in a while,” the Super Bowl 50 MVP told Denver’s new quarterback. “Since 18 was here.”

As in Peyton Manning. The QB the Broncos have been trying to replace for five-plus years.

It was high praise. And it got Broncos Country excited.

If Miller thinks Bridgewater is worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Manning, maybe the long search for a quarterback is over. Surely, he knows what he’s talking about.

Well … not so fast.

During the past five years, Miller has had high praise for several QBs. In fact, it’s his pattern.

“He just has that Peyton Manning vibe,” Miller said about Trevor Siemian in 2015. “He kind of looks like Peyton Manning too. I trust him in everything, our whole organization trusts him.”

That was a bit hyperbolic. But he was just getting warmed up.

“Looks/Feels right to me!” Miller posted on Instagram when the Broncos signed Case Keenum. “We got what we were looking for! Franchise QB that’s the perfect fit for DENVER!”

Oops. But he wasn’t done

“He looks like a Super MVP to me,” Miller said about Joe Flacco during training camp in 2019.

That proved to be incorrect. So was another QB review later in the season.

“He’s just a beast,” Miller said about Drew Lock when the rookie started 2-0. “He’s a rock star in the making.”

More like a backup singer.

It’s not a bad thing that Miller says these things. He’s a positive guy. He supports his teammates.

But it’s a good reminder that his proclamations don’t mean much. They’re a bit like the sign on the diner that says “the world’s best coffee” is sold there.

Only Buddy the Elf takes it seriously. He’s a bit naive.

Broncos Country shouldn’t be. They’ve been sold the bill of goods before.

Von Miller always hypes his quarterbacks. In fact, he overhypes them.

That’s what history shows. In comical fashion.
