Packers’ concessions quash hope of Broncos landing Rodgers

If reports that Aaron Rodgers indicated he’ll play for Green Bay this upcoming season didn’t dash the hopes of bringing the reigning MVP to Denver, certainly the new details into the Packers concessions to the quarterback must be the nail in the coffin.

Per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Packers are offering a number of concessions to entice Rodgers to return to Green Bay for at least one more season.

Both sides hammered out “mutually agreed-upon terms” over the past weekend, Schefter reports, that are said to have nearly convinced Rodgers to not skip training camp, which kicks off this week.

The reported concessions include:

• The final year of Rodgers’ contract (2023) would be voided with no tags allowed in the future

• An agreement to review Rodgers’ situation at the end of the 2021 season

• Rodgers’ contract would be restructured to save cap room while avoiding any loss of income for the quarterback

• Mechanisms would be put into place to address Rodgers’ issues with the team

Schefter’s report comes on the heels of one from his NFL Network counterpart, Ian Rapoport, on Monday morning saying Rodgers had “indicated to people close to him that he does plan to play for (Green Bay) this season.”

That news broke during the Packers’ annual shareholders meeting on Monday, where general manager Brian Gutekunst told those in attendance at Lambeau Field the club remained “hopeful for a positive resolution” to the situation with Rodgers.

“We want him back. We’re committed to him for 2021 and beyond. We’re looking forward to winning another Super Bowl with him,” said Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy during the meeting.
