If the Broncos want to find success, their offense needs to be a little boring

Sep 1, 2020, 6:48 AM

Boring is better when it comes to this Broncos offense. It’s not exciting, but the Broncos don’t have the personnel to have a high-flying offense.

With question marks at both tackle spots, a young quarterback and a new offensive coordinator, the Broncos need to lean heavily on Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay to keep this offense going. They really don’t want Drew Lock throwing 40 passes a game.

The Broncos loaded up on weapons for their young QB. They drafted two wide receivers in the first two rounds in 2020 and still have a first-round tight end. On paper, you would want to fill the air with footballs. However, reality isn’t always so nice.

The Broncos offensive line has been below average the past few years. And with Ja’Wuan James opting out of the season, this leaves a massive hole at right tackle. The Broncos can’t expect Lock to drop back to pass with such inconsistency at left and right tackle.

So how can this team mask the issues at tackle and help their young QB? Running the football. The Broncos already had a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher in Lindsay and added a savvy veteran in Gordon. These two need to be leaned on heavily for this offense to flourish. If the Broncos think Lock is going to throw 40 passes a game and make this offense look like the Chiefs, they’re in for a rude awakening.

The Broncos need to lean on their run game to balance this offense, the interior offensive line is a big part of this. With the addition of Graham Glasgow and Dalton Risner entering year two, the Broncos could have a special set of guards to create openings for their running backs. With this brand-new offense, running the ball effectively will balance the offense as the young weapons develop.

It’s not flashy or exciting, but a high flying offense is not the answer in 2020 if the Broncos want to win. They need to lean on Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay as Drew Lock and this young offense develop. The tackles are not good enough to hold up in pass protection, there was no real offseason to learn the new playbook from the new offensive coordinator and this pass catching core, though exciting, is young and lacks experience.

This year, the Broncos offensive success rests on the shoulders of Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay.
