Broncos kick off free-agent spending by signing a versatile o-lineman

Mar 16, 2020, 4:28 PM

It took awhile, but the Broncos finally jumped into the free agency frenzy on Monday afternoon. According to reports, John Elway’s first big offseason expenditure will bolster the team in the trenches.

The signing of Glasgow could spell the end of Connor McGovern’s time in Denver. During his four years in Detroit, Glasgow played both guard positions, but he spent the last two seasons as the Lions starting center. It stands to reason that’s the position he was signed to play for the Broncos.

A move Denver made earlier in the day adds credence to that line of thinking, as well. The Broncos showed who they’d like to have as their starting right guard in 2020.

Glasgow was a third-round pick by the Lions in the 2016 NFL Draft. He jumped into the lineup immediately, appearing in 15 games as a rookie, 11 as a starter. During his four-year career, Glasgow has appeared in 62 out of 64 games, starting 58. So he’s a seasons, experienced pro to anchor the Broncos offensive line.

With the four-year, $44 million contract offered to Glasgow, the Broncos now have around $27 million in remaining salary cap space. They can bolster that number by another $10 million, however, if they part ways with quarterback Joe Flacco.

As a result, don’t expect John Elway to be done yet. Adding a center is only the first of what should be several free-agent moves by the Broncos.
