The latest NFL quarterback rankings should fuel the Flacco-Lock debate

This week, one topic has dominated conversations in Broncos Country. Because the team has yet to get Drew Lock back on the practice field, let alone provide an answer as to whether or not he’ll be added to the active roster this season, there has been a lot of debate about the rookie quarterback.

Some people think the Broncos should get him on the field immediately. The season is lost, so why not use the remaining games to find out if Lock has a chance to be the team’s quarterback of the future.

Others believe it would be foolish to put a rookie on the field with the current Broncos. They’s prefer to see Joe Flacco try to navigate behind a spotty offensive line and with a receiving corps that is now without Emmanuel Sanders.

There are valid points on both sides. But both miss the biggest question: Which quarterback is better at this point?

That sounds crazy, given that one is a former Super MVP and the other has never taken an NFL snap. But the latest QB rankings for NFL.com make it debatable.

In this week’s edition, the league’s web site has Flacco ranked as the 26th best quarterback in the NFL, tied with Andy Dalton. The list of names behind the Broncos signal caller are alarming, to say the least.

Three are in-season replacements for injured / underperforming starters, as Mason Rudolph, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Moore check in at 28, 29 and 30, respectively. And bottoming out the list are Case Keenum and Mitchell Trubisky.

Those are the only quarterbacks playing worse that Flacco at the moment. Given that, is there any reason to believe Lock would be worse?

After all, Jameis Winston is ahead of Flacco; he threw five interceptions the last time he was on a football field. Sam Darnold is also above the Broncos quarterback; he was seeing ghosts on Monday night against the Patriots.

It begs the question: What is there to debate?

The pro-Lock crowd are asking to sit a quarterback who is playing well, giving his team a chance to win. They’re asking to sit down a player who is listed amongst some of the league’s all-time journeymen
