Cheers and Jeers: Broncos Country showed out in a big way to remember Pat Bowlen

Jun 21, 2019, 7:15 AM | Updated: 7:18 am

From Broncos Country flooding Broncos Stadium at Mile High with tributes to late owner Pat Bowlen to Charlie Blackmon seemingly not knowing how not to hit, this week saw a lot of highlights in Denver sports.

Here are the “cheers” and “jeers” for this week:

Cheers | Broncos Country showing out strong to pay tribute to Pat Bowlen

In what certainly merits its own “cheer,” the Denver Broncos and the family of Pat Bowlen held a public tribute to the club’s late owner, who passed away last week after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s.

And Broncos Country certainly heard the call.

More than 5,000 fans paid their respects to Bowlen on Tuesday, some waiting in line for hours to view the memorabilia from Bowlen’s tenure as Broncos owner and to speak to his family. The event generated so much interest that it had to be extended two hours.

Said Bowlen’s daughter Beth Bowlen Wallace: “It’s been very comforting. It’s been an overwhelming time emotionally for all of us, but to see the fans and to see the players and the staff that have come through has brought great comfort because we realize, which we already did, it just solidifies how much my father meant to this community. It’s mirrored back to them how much this community meant to my father.”

Jeers | Lakewood youth baseball parents lose grip on reality

Scuffles at youth sporting events are by no means an isolated incident. In fact, there are hundreds of YouTube videos dedicated to the darker side of youth sports.

But the display exhibited at the now infamous Lakewood youth baseball game last weekend is among the worst in recent memory.

It’s abhorrent. It’s unacceptable. And not least, it’s over just a game.

It’s time for those “grown-ups” to grow up.

Cheers | Charlie Blackmon is the best hitter on the planet right now

When you’re by far the best performer in a series that saw the most runs scored (92) since 1900, you’re doing something right.

During the Rockies last homestand, Blackmon slugged his way to a .568 average with six home runs, 15 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.784 on his way to a National League Player of the Week Award.
