Schlereth: ‘Makes a lot of sense’ for Broncos to target developmental QB Thorson

Among the quarterbacks the Denver Broncos will bring in for one of the team’s 30 visits before the NFL Draft, according to reports, is Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson.
Per 9News’ Mike Klis, Thorson, who’s expected to be a mid-round pick, will meet with the Broncos on Wednesday.
And while “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said on Monday he doesn’t believe the Broncos would be in the market to draft a first-round quarterback this offseason, Thorson could make sense in a later round as a developmental player.
“I think it’s important to always be developing a quarterback. And I think you look at this Broncos team, it’s the perfect strategy,” Schlereth said.
With Joe Flacco owed no guaranteed money after this season, Denver would be wise to develop a quarterback as a successor, said Schlereth.
“Why wouldn’t you be developing young quarterbacks? Guys that are smart. Guys that come from programs where you know they’re coached well,” Schlereth said.
And under the tutelage of head coach Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern players, like Thorson, can be the kind of players the Broncos want to develop in their program because “you know they have a great football understanding, they’ve been coached well, they’ve been coached hard, and they have been, basically, grown as men …”
“I think it’s a great strategy. And I think that kid makes a lot of sense,” Schlereth said of Thorson.
